The Catacombs are one of the most appreciated touristic attractions in Palermo. This subterranean cemetery of the Capuchin monastery, has nearly eight thousand mummified bodies among friars, famous people, rich inhabitants, as well as common people of Palermo. From the XVII to the end of the XIX century these bodies were entombed in the galleries (crypts) built below the Monastery and the church entitled to the Madonna of Peace. The micro-climatic conditions of these galleries as well as the methods used to embalm the bodies, have permitted them to remain remarkably intact and identifiable
